  • 1.  Communicating to Members about a New Strategic Plan

    Posted 02-05-2016 04:12 PM

My organization's Board of Directors is working on a new strategic plan for the organization.  This new plan will be a significant departure from the past, and will necessitate a re-alignment of the organization, including sunsetting legacy programs that are much loved by a segment (11%) of the membership.  Does anyone have advice about how best to: 1) communicate the new plan to members (we're a national org, so members are spread around the country), or 2) facilitate a smooth transition away from legacy programs towards new ones--how best can we sunset programs in a way that is respectful of members and doesn't anger people?  Board members have been blogging updates about the strategic planning process as it's progressed, but most members don't pay attention until something big happens, like when their favorite committee is terminated.  Thanks for any advice you can provide and have a great weekend!

I'm very interested in this as well.  Terminating legacy programs are not easy, change in general is not easy.  I think in this case you cannot over communicate. Can you create a short video on the new strategic direction (from you and others that were involved in the planning process), why it's important, etc. and then post on YouTube?  It's doesn't need to be super fancy.  You can also put links to it on your website, include in emails, social media sites, etc.
