We're adding a Young Professionals luncheon to our Annual Convention's agenda, and I was hoping for some feedback and suggestions.

    • What type of format have you used?
    • What kind of ice breakers (if any) did you use?
    • Did you have a speaker or just allow for networking conversations?
    • Anything we should be sure to include or avoid?

    Thank you for your help!

    Hi Catherine,
What's worked best for us is a Social Function during our Winter/Summer Conferences (i.e. - a trip to the Capitol Brewery).  They also host a session at our Student Seminar - and give a report during our business meetings.  They are currently working on the 2nd year of our Mentorship Program.

    Hello Catherine,

We have a mixer event for our students and early career members at our annual meeting. Representatives from approximately 25 organizations with job openings and internships are at tables placed around the outside of the room. We provide finger food, and attendees can visit the tables to learn about opportunities at each organization and to apply for positions.

I think this would work even if there were a lower number of organizations represented.

We've also noticed that many of our younger members are vegetarian or vegan, so have adjusted the types of foods offered.

    Hope this is helpful!

    Mona

    Hi Catherine,

Regarding the scientific professional organization I currently work with, our young professionals lunch is scheduled in a round table format and is more of a "meet the expert" event. Ahead of time the planning committee selects 8-10 topic areas that would be of interest to the young professional attendees. The committee then selects an expert in each topic area. When young professionals go to register for the event, they register for a particular table based on the topic and/or expert in which they are interested. We cap each table at 13 registrants. Usually 10-12 registrants actually attend each table. It is free to attend so not everyone shows up. We do provide all attendees with a free lunch, which seems to be a great incentive!

At the event, the full lunch hour becomes a more intimate experience for the young investigators. They spend the full hour speaking with the expert at their table as well as the 9-11 other young investigators at their table who are interested in the same topic. Oftentimes the experts and young investigators stay in the room to network and mingle well past the end of the lunch hour. We've found that centering the networking around specific topics stimulates excellent conversation and networking.

    Sincerely,
    Alicia
