  • 1.  Book Recommendations?

    Posted 02-21-2018 11:46 AM
    Hi All:

I'm updating my Reading List and am looking for suggestions on non-fiction books. These can be on any topic (personal finance, leadership, culture, biographies etc.) Do you have any recommendations?

    Thank you!

    Howdy!

Definitely not up everyone's alley but a great one I read recently (and keep going back to) is In Pursuit of the Unknown: 17 Equations That Changed the World by Ian Stewart.  Fascinating take on how people look at the world, see patterns and come up with equations that make stuff fit together – across the board – and have made so much of what we take for granted possible (and a lot of this was done a LONG time ago).

Another one is The Man Who Knew Infinity by Robert Kanigel.  Again, a bit out there – it's about an essentially self-trained Indian mathematician who was brought to England and pretty much blew away all the "best" mathematical minds in the world around the turn of the century (19th to 20th).  Until he arrived in England (Cambridge and Oxford) no one took him (Srinivasa Ramanujan) seriously because India, of course, "doesn't produce mathematicians on the caliber of the western world"...pretty cool story.

Both deal with some pretty deep stuff but are written in a very readable fashion...enjoy!

    Sincerely,

    Hi, Erica.

From a personal reading list developed over a 20-year career spanning international development, public service, and teaching at the university level, here are four books that I recommend highly:

The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge

    Servant Leadership by Robert Greenleaf

The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh

Good to Great by Jim Collins

The lessons I took from these books influence daily how I make decisions and approach personal and professional opportunities.  I hope you enjoy them.

    Best regards,

This is going to sound like I'm shilling for my own book review, but I think Spencer X. Smith and DP Knudten's book ROTOMA: The ROI of Social Media Top of Mind is a must for anyone who includes social media in your communications strategy. Easy read, very practical and relevant.

    Erica,
A lot of good recommendations here. My last good non-fiction reads were by the same author, Joe Sweeney (with Mike Yorkey):

Networking is a Contact Sport: How Staying Connected and Serving Others Will Help You Grow Your Business, Expand Your Influence -- or Even Land Your Next Job

Moving the Needle: Get Clear, Get Free, and Get Going in Your Career, Business, and Life!

Joe is from Madison, Wisconsin and his book reads with that tone. Some of it is things you have heard before, but I like his language and ease of concepts. Plus with the networking themed Roadshow coming up in Milwaukee, it might be good to brush up.

With all of these good book recommendations I'm feeling like I have to branch out from my normal "fiction reading":)
