Upping Your Ask Game: Generate More Revenue by Making the Right Ask

A major trend across all associations is the increased need for non-dues revenue. As an association staff member, you may not be trained as a professional fundraiser, but you need to think like one. Sponsorships, conferences, educational programs, certifications, associations are looking into every angle to embrace new avenues of revenue, while at the same time looking to strike the right deal with hospitality partners, corporations and vendors to build strategic alliances. Sealing the deal starts with the relationship you’ve developed and closes on the ask that you make. How you ask can determine whether you just make budget or whether you’re calling in the Brinks trucks.

In this session Laura will share the magic words of the Ask for:

  1. When you have a short amount of time and you need revenue, desperately
  2. When your timeline is laid out in front of you and you have the time to ASK big or go home;
  3. The Five-Step Foolproof Method for any ask – with just two sentences and a question!

This interactive session is geared towards association professionals and industry suppliers who want to learn about making the ask and building relationships.

Upping Your Ask Game: Asking for More than Money

People tend to think of making the ask in the financial sense, but as professionals serving the association industry, we make non-monetary asks every day. We ask for volunteers to engage in the association, people to contribute to our educational programs, people to book our hotel or our sign up for services, we navigate difficult conversations with others where negotiation is key, and the list goes on. We also ask for things that will benefit us both personally and professionally – a leadership position, a promotion, recognition.

Join us for this session to explore:

  1. How to feel more comfortable making the ask
  2. Knowing what you need and preparing for the ask
  3. The Five-Step Foolproof Method for any ask – with just two sentences and a question!

This interactive session is geared towards association professionals and industry suppliers who need to make the ask and want to feel comfortable doing it.

About the presenter Laura Fredricks
Laura_Fredericks-01.pngLaura is based out of New York City, is the Billion-Dollar ASK-Maker Powerhouse. As an attorney-turned-philanthropic advisor, Laura Fredricks knows how to ask. She comes from a seasoned career in industries best known for making the most high profile asks—law and philanthropy—and is the first to merge strategies from both professional sectors into a mainstream practice – THE ASK©.THE ASK© is the name of her literary series, speaking tour, personal consulting firm, and most importantly, latest book.

"I’ve been working for my present employer for six years now with the job title of Executive Assistant. Over the years, I’ve taken on additional work responsibilities above and beyond traditional administrative support, so I’ve felt that the title no longer accurately reflects the work I do. In October, I attended your program held by NYSAE, and I also started reading your book, The ASK: For Business, For Philanthropy, For Everyday Living. Each December, all employees have an annual review, which also includes a self-evaluation where we list our accomplishments for the year and share them with our supervisor. I decided that this would be a great time to ask for a new title so, in preparation for my review, I wrote down my request as two sentences and a question and practiced in front of a mirror. At the end of my review, I made my ASK. In response, my supervisor asked me to suggest some possible job titles, and I made her a list. She met with our HR director, and I got a new title (signature line below) effective Jan. 1.

I definitely credit the ASK method, and your NYSAE program for providing me with the tools and confidence to ask for my new title. Thank you! You are welcome to share my success story. If it’s too long, you can edit it down. I hope it helps you capture the attention of the folks at TED."
